Shropshire Star

Magazine will inform members

Some WI members are still grumbling about the rise in our annual subscription and the introduction of a magazine. Not all members have such negative views. Home and Country, the magazine published for many years, was losing subscriptions and advertising revenue. Difficult decisions had to be made by the board of trustees.

It came to the conclusion that the annual subscription should go up by £4 to include a copy of WI Life for every member eight times a year. What a reasonable price for a magazine.

Surely it is important that all WI members have the chance to know what is happening in other institutes?

The WI is far more than groups of women meeting once a month, listening to a speaker, having tea and going home. Shropshire members have the chance to join in the many activities and events arranged by our federation. Through the National Federation they have a voice on many current issues.

Soon every member will be up to date with WI matters. Information from the National Federation will be available for every member to read at home. This will cut down on the cost of mailing items to individual WIs.

One of the areas of discontent is the fact that the new system has been introduced without wider consultation. The board of trustees, elected by members, has investigated various options and decided on this course. If this action hadn't been taken we would have still had a hefty increase in subscriptions and no magazine.
