Michael Noden, who is from south Cheshire, appeared for sentence before a district judge at North Staffordshire Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The 25-year-old had previously admitted failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, having no MOT certificate and defective brakes on May 22.

Jonathan Stephen Scott, 17, of Smithy Lane, Knighton, died from head injuries following the accident as he walked home with friends along London Road in Knighton just before 11.20pm.

At court Noden was given a 140 day custodial sentence for failing to stop and 140 days to run concurrently for failing to report an accident.

There were no separate charges for the other matters. Following the accident a tribute was made by Jonathan's father Stephen, of Smithy Lane, Knighton, who said his son was a "gentle giant".

He said he was heartbroken by the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years.

He said: "He had just turned 17 and was full of life.

"He was looking forward to helping me set up a rural skills project in memory of his brother George, who died only three years ago at the age of 10 due to meningitis." Popular stories:
