What need to drive at 160mph?

Many contributors to this page have lost sight of the real issues surrounding the case of the police officer reported as driving at two and three times the road speed limit in our borough. We accept that advanced driver training equips a successful candidate to cope with more testing situations behind the wheel; but this training is not all about driving at high speed.

We also accept that a person will be a better driver the more in tune they become with their vehicle's characteristics.

The issue for the proper public perception of any of the emergency services is: Should anyone be driving on public roads at "eye-watering" speeds in a vehicle that is not clearly identifiable as belonging to an emergency service?

And what is there to be learned from driving a car in a straight line at 160 mph?

Is it not the case that in some police forces even fast response drivers are instructed to abandon high speed chases when pursuit speeds exceed just two-thirds of that driven in this case? Why is West Mercia different?
