The Weekend of Words festival will be staged once again at Ludlow Assembly Rooms, from October 21 to 23, and this year the craggy-faced American comedian, a veteran of TV panel shows such as QI and Have I Got News For You, will be kicking off the first night.

Helen Hughes, chief executive of Ludlow Assembly Rooms, said the festival was Ludlow's first dedicated literary event and would include a full programme of talks, comedy, music and poetry across the three days. She said: "We didn't know last year that A Weekend of Words would become an annual event.

"But because of the incredibly positive response we received, we're back – bigger than last year and with something for everyone."

Rich Hall has been writing and performing comedy in his homeland and UK since the 1980s and has had a long stand-up career both in character as country musician Otis Lee Crenshaw, and simply as himself.

He has also created and starred in several series for the BBC, including documentaries.
