And many will be on display at the Welsh Fermentation Festival in Mid Wales on August 27.

It will be held at the home of Welsh Mountain Cider at Llanidloes.

Owners Chava Richman and Bill Bleasdale make live, naturally fermented cider and say that they are passionate about fermentation.

Chava said: "We have decided to put on this event at our smallholding and orchard in Mid Wales to bring together makers and enjoyers of fermented food and drink.

"We make some of our cider, particularly that destined to be drunk young in plastic containers, but around 80 per cent of our production goes directly into 100-gallon oak butts, where it is matured for up to two years before being bottled or put in kegs for consumption."

The festival is a one-day event with stalls, workshops and demonstrations to offer people a day of hands-on experience with fermentation.

Chava continued: "We will have demonstrations including how to make sauerkraut, start a sourdough, live cider tasting and more, and a variety of stalls with samples and sales of fermented food and drink as well."

Tickets cost £5 with children admitted free of charge.
