Maralyn Hepworth and Frank Oldaker prepare for the Montford Bridge Potato Show

More than 50 varieties will be on show in Montford Bridge tomorrow.

The only potato-themed festival in Shropshire is run by Shropshire Organic Gardeners.

The event sees enthusiasts come from all over the country in search of rare seedlings.

And organiser Frank Oldaker believes the occasion serves as a chance to welcome the beginning of spring.

Mr Oldaker, from Monkmoor, said: "Every year people coming to the event are happy and full of enthusiasm – it may still be winter but they are thinking of spring and getting out in their gardens again."

Members of Shropshire Organic Gardeners first came up with the idea at The Shrewsbury Flower Show in 2004.

Mr Oldaker said: "There are 589 different varieties of potato and it was very difficult for gardeners to buy the different seeds.

"We decided to get together and put on a day. We had tremendous support and it has been the same ever since."

Potato Day will take place at Montford Village Hall from 9am to 3pm.
