Headliners Foo Fighters, fronted by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, wowed a huge main stage crowd last night with a greatest hits set that included Best Of You, Everlong and Stacked Actors during a festival closing set.

Earlier that day the band had given an impromptu acoustic performance on the smaller Channel 4 stage to the surprise of many people in the audience.

Alex Hardie, from Muxton, Telford, said watching his favourite band perform twice in one day was the perfect way to celebrate his 27th birthday.

He said: "I was obviously excited to see the Foo Fighters in the first place, but when my friend texted me to tell me they were playing an acoustic set as well I couldn't believe it.

"For me they are the best band in the world, so to see them twice is amazing and has made it all worth while putting up with the rain," he added.

For some the surprise set made up for the disappointment of indie badboy Pete Doherty's no-show when his band Babyshambles failed to appear for their early evening set.

Traffic problems were blamed for the delay which saw the band's slot moved to 10pm on the smaller Virgin Mobile Union stage.

The Kooks, featuring former Bridgnorth Endowed School pupil Max Rafferty on bass, headlined the Channel 4 stage last night, treating fans to new material alongside hits including She Moves In Her Own Way and Naive.

Other bands to perform throughout the day included Editors, Snow Patrol, Primal Scream and Kanye West, who celebrated hitting the top of the singles charts the same day.

On Saturday night The Killers had headlined the main stage, while dance act Basement Jaxx attracted a large audience on the top of the bill at the Channel 4 stage.

Manic Street Preachers, Iggy & The Stooges, Kasabian and The Fratellis had also played live on the first day of the weekend.

The massive clear-up was already under way today as the last few campers left the site this morning.
