The Indian runner duck arrived at Whittington Castle, near Oswestry, last week.

Castle manager Sue Ellis said: "He is a real character. We asked the school to ask the children to name him and we would choose the winner and give a prize.

"Names suggested included Jogger, Kusa – Indian for Happy – John and Duncan, but the winning name was chosen as Benedict Cumberquack."

Children from Whittington Primary School visited the castle yesterdayto see how Benedict liked his new name, and were given an ice cream to enjoy as they walked back to school on the last day of term.

Mrs Ellis said she hopes Benedict will stick around in the castle's moat to meet the hundreds of visitors which are expected over the summer.

The castle is expected to be full of activity next weekend for its biggest event of the year, the multi-period living history weekend. Events will take place from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, July 25 and 26, and admission is £2 adults and £1 children.

Mrs Ellis said: "This year we have several new groups including The Birmingham Pals from World War I to show life at different stages of history.

"The boats are back on the moat as well as a new stall "Shoot a knight" for all to have a go. There will be talks on archery and weapon displays."

A new bench has also been placed in the grounds in a shaded area overlooking the moat.
