Food recycling firm interested in Ludlow tip
The boss of a food recycling firm has admitted he would be interested in taking over the running of a county tip which is due to close at the end of the month.
Council chiefs opted to axe the Coder Road Amenity Skip and Household Recycling Centre in Ludlow despite a petition signed by 2,000 people opposing its closure.
Campaigners described the decision as "appalling" - and last week it was revealed that other recycling options are being considered for the site.
Ludlow MP Philip Dunne revealed he had sat down for talks with Mid Wales-based firm Cwm Harry.
The social enterprise uses digesters to recycle food waste and create electricity to help power the National Grid.
And today the boss of Cwm Harry, Adam Kennerley, admitted he would be interested in taking over the land.
The firm already runs an anaerobic digestion plant adjacent to the tip – and one of the options being considered is to use the Coder Road site to expand Cwm Harry's operations.
Mr Kennerley said: "With the recent decision by Shropshire Council to close the amenity skip site on Coder Road in Ludlow, one of the options for the land vacated is to incorporate it into the redevelopment of the adjoining anaerobic digestion plant.
"Currently leased to Cwm Harry, we are committed to making the digester a viable community operated business, able to recycle nutrients on to farm land for food production and to generate renewable energy.
"Cwm Harry are looking forward to re-establishing the anaerobic digester as a viable recycling business during 2014.
"We are keen to work with the community on making this a reality and look forward to discussing with the council how the vacant amenity skip site might be put to good use."
