Muller's £17m plans for new Market Drayton factory go in
Plans for a huge new £17million butter plant which will create 20 jobs in Shropshire have taken a step forward after dairy giant Muller Wiseman submitted a planning application.
The yoghurt and dessert company has applied to Shropshire Council to remodel an existing factory, create a two storey extension and build 14 new silos at its base in Market Drayton.
The butter plant will be built in a bottling plant at the back of the Shrewsbury Road site.
The firm will create about 100 jobs by moving into the butter industry, 20 of which will be in Market Drayton.
Bosses at Muller Wiseman said they will begin making butter as they are being forced to sell off surplus cream at commodity prices.
A design and access statement submitted to Shropshire Council planners said two of the 14 silos will be built at a later date and described the extension work as 'modest.'
The butter plant will use 90,000 tonnes of cream produced by Muller Wiseman in the UK each year.
It will create up to 45,000 tonnes of butter, making it the biggest butter plant in the country.
There would be new traffic lights and a zebra crossing on the Tern Valley Industrial Estate Road and a new footpath to the site.
Nearby residents have until March 1 to comment.
