End of the road for Newport garage
A car dealership which has been in business in Shropshire for more than half a century was closing for the final time today.
LM Browns Motors in High Street, Newport, was opened in 1959 by Joe Brown but now current owner Ray Corbett has decided to retire.
Mr Corbett, who is 69 on Sunday and originally from Edgmond, started at the firm as an apprentice mechanic 51 years ago to the day tomorrow.
He went on to work in the workshop before going into sales and eventually buying the business 25 years ago.
"I've loved my 51 years," he said. "I've met lots of marvellous people and it's been a pleasure to be associated with them."
Popular Mr Corbett admitted he would have mixed emotions when he turns the key for the final time.
"There will be a little bit of emotion, of course," he said. "But it's time to call it a day."
Mr Corbett, who has three children and seven grandchildren, reflected on the huge changes he has seen in his long stint in business.
"It's amazing how things have changed," he said. "I don't think there are many shops in Newport which have been there as long as us.
"Business is much more difficult now. I think it's going more and more online and more technical. I haven't really embraced that side of things."
Now Mr Corbett is looking forward to travelling the world with his wife and playing more golf and snooker.
The building is up for sale but, contrary to popular rumour, Mr Corbett insists there has been no interest from pub giant Wetherspoons.
Janet Herriman, who has worked at Browns Motors for about 40 years, is retiring while part-time assistant Val Hendy is also moving on.
