Royal baby: Choice of name will certainly please the Queen

So as his little fist clenches above the blanket, it is welcome to His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. Well, it has a ring to it.

And George has certainly been listed as a favourite for the new royal baby. Though it is actually in 12th place on Britain's current list of most popular names for a boy.

However, since King George V founded the House of Windsor and George VI was our own Queen's beloved father – though he was christened Albert – she is going to be a pretty thrilled lady. We can perhaps guess what they talked about when she dropped into Kensington Palace yesterday!

And there is more. Alexandra was thought to be a chosen name for a girl and it is Her Majesty's middle name. It is also the name of favourite royal cousin Princess Alexandra, whose lady-in-waiting Meriel Afia lives near Shifnal. And on top of that, there have been three Kings of Scotland named Alexander during the 12th and 13th centuries.

So maybe there are several very good reasons for choosing Alexander as a second name along with Louis as the third.

Prince William is William Arthur Philip Louis and, of course, Louis was the name of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, uncle to Prince Philip and mentor to new grandfather, the Prince of Wales.

As they decamped to the in-laws for bonding and recovery, the new parents expressed their delight in their boy by proudly announcing that they will baptise him George Alexander Louis.

Now that the little chap has a name to answer to, the young family can get on with child raising.

So will he one day be King George? Maybe. But when the time comes, this little baby might be crowned with one of his other names or a quite different one, come to that. For now, welcome Prince George of Cambridge.
