Blog: Let's back Tony Gray to score the goals for AFC Telford
It's easier to reflect on the back of two wins. Say it quietly, but things appear to be clicking nicely into place, writes Bucks blogger Rob Hughes.
The Bucks Head is becoming a fortress that it needs to be, if we are going to maintain our promotion push. The brand on the park is becoming increasingly effective. Well, we're creating plenty more chances – now we just have to increase our conversion ratio. Starting perhaps with chipping together to purchase a pair of shooting boots for Tony Gray – rather than the novelty ones Sean Cooke switched them for a couple of weeks ago.
In fairness to Tony Gray, despite not troubling the score board operator at the moment, he is still turning in 100% performances. It's unfortunate for him that strikers are judged on their goal tally. He has however, fully contributed to these last two victories, creating goal scoring opportunities for team mates and consistently getting into positions himself. I have faith in him to net one sooner rather than later but I have to hope though – not just for him, but myself.
The more I back him, the more I get it in the neck from my dad! Whoops. Actually, if I am getting that anxious for him to net a couple, think about the pressure he is under, multiply it by a few hundred supporters, plus the pressure he will be putting on himself. We just need to back him and hope he keeps getting into those positions.
And until he produces the goods, I hope that the defence continues to be protected by the ever impressive Mike Grogan and work to shut out the opposition. It would be more of a concern if we were losing points as a result of Gray's current drought in front of goal. All we can do as Bucks' supporters is get behind him and encourage him. All we be forgotten if he is the man that fires the goal that wins the play offs, or better still sends us up automatically!
One of the current debates on message boards are the missing 100s. The fact we won so convincingly on Saturday and then lost circa. 300 on the gate for Tuesday night. You have to wonder what, if any, significance this has. Yes – it is obviously important not to let gates drop, but the usual answers could be. Staylbridge brought a hundred or so – Vauxhall, a clutch – if we're lucky. Home supporters may have had to prioritise which game to attend as the congested fixture list saw us play twice within 3 days.
For me though, the biggest factors, were two miscommunications by the press. Firstly, (the usually excellent coverage afforded us by) Radio Shropshire indicating we had an away game at Luton, Vauxhall on the day of the game – rather than the home game we in fact had. And the BBC Conference North website stating the game was in fact postponed. In both instances this will have on some level have impacted on numbers attending, either making alternative plans upon hearing the game was 'away' or indeed postponed.
Now this may have been out of the hands of the club and if so, then okay, but these two professional organisations, particularly the BBC, need to consider the impact this can have on a football club, particularly a fans run organisation like our own.
Now with that grumble out of the way.
AFC Telford United's Road to Wembley starts in earnest on Saturday. The Bucks entertain AFC Scarborough Athletic with a 3pm kick off. Let's get behind the club, progression in the tournament will spark interest. Increase gates, top up the coffers and raise the profile and an appearance at Wembley will give Telford fans what they crave.
£11 adults £8 concessions £5 for 16-19 year olds and U16s: £2. If everyone can strive to bring an extra person along, we together can get the place bouncing again.
Together we must believe!
