The energetic box-to-box midfielder, 21, has been interesting Town and Sunderland south of the border after Steven Gerrard’s Gers made him available.
But, according to sources in Scotland, Shrews appear to have won the race to take him on loan for the campaign, with a deal ‘very close’.
Boss John Askey was on the hunt for a central midfield replacement for Jon Nolan, who is joining Ipswich. But Town have also sent midfielder Bryn Morris out on loan to league rivals Wycombe.
Salop are also interested in Tranmere star Oliver Norburn.
Docherty has made 14 appearances for Rangers since joining from Hamilton in January.
