Four-points secured as Telford Tigers win double header
Telford Tigers secured their first four-point weekend as they beat EPL rivals Peterborough Phantoms home and away – scoring 11 goals.
Saturday saw the Tigers travel to Peterborough in the first of a double header with the Phantoms.
Tigers came away with a 6-2 win, James Preece getting their first goal just after the half-hour mark. Phantoms levelled a minute later through Piatak. Tigers then scored two quick goals from Nathan Salem and Scott McKenzie to end the second period 3-1 ahead.
Former Tiger Thomas Soar pulled one back for Phantoms before the Telford outfit's captain, McKenzie, got his second of the game to restore the visitors' two-goal advantage.
The game was then delayed for 20 minutes following a serious injury to McKenzie, who was taken to hospital with concussion.
Tigers later secured the win with a second goal from Salem and one from Miika Kiviranta.
Sunday's home game saw another physical encounter, with both teams missing players: Tigers were without the injured McKenzie, Phantoms were without Piatak, missing the game after a hit from the Telford captain the previous night.
In a fast-paced start to the game, Tigers raced into the lead with three goals in the first period: Kiviranta scoring his second of the weekend after just two minutes to open the scoring, followed by strikes by Marek Mikusovic and player-coach Watkins.
The second period saw Tigers extend their lead by a further two goals as both Mikusovic and Callum Bowley scored unassisted short-handed strikes to give the hosts with a five-goal lead.
A dejected looking Phantoms team changed their netminder after the fifth goal.
The third period brought a physical approach by Phantoms that was more than matched by Tigers, with three fights.
Phantoms player Nicky Watt was thrown out of the game after being adjudged to have left the bench to take issue with Nathan Salem.
Phantoms managed a consolation goal through Marc Levers with 10 minutes remaining, but Tigers ran out convincing 5-1 winners.
Tigers player coach Tom Watkins was delighted with his team's four-point haul last weekend.
He said: "I'm really happy with the weekend's results.
