Paul Lambert after Wolves thriller: We were oustanding
Paul Lambert said his Wolves players were 'outstanding' after they shared a dramatic 4-4 draw with Fulham at Molineux.
Wolves recovered from 3-1 down to lead 4-3 thanks to David Edwards' last-minute stunner.
But then Floyd Ayite's 94th minute header levelled things to leave Wolves devastated at the end of a remarkable match in which the two sides mustered 46 shots between them.
"It's mixed emotions," Lambert said.
"It's not often you see these type of games - but that's exciting football.
"I thought we started the game great, got a really good goal and should have been 2-0 up when Nouha (Dicko) robbed the goalkeeper and pulled his shot wide.
"Then they go up the park and score, and score two wondergoals. Sometimes you can't legislate for that, that just happens.
"It was reminiscent of when I was Norwich. Game that like - exciting games, the crowd, everybody bang at it.
"I'm proud of them - I thought they were oustanding.
"And the crowd are unbelievable with us. We're a young team up against a very good side, but in that second half we were outstanding.
"And what a place this is when you've got a game like that.
"It was important to stop (the run of home defeats) and the crowd were a major factor.
"I can't fault the team. That's why you play the game. It's heart attack material."
Wolves were again poor defensively and contributed to Fulham's goals with sloppy play at the back.
But they always looked a threat going forward and could have scored several more on another day.
"We've got to be stronger defensively," Lambert said. "We look a threat going forward but we have to be stronger as a unit, not just at the back.
"That'll come. They're young lads and with young lads you get mistakes - but you also get desire. It's marrying the two.
"I think we're a lot better than when I first came in.
"We need a little bit of help, lads with know-how in the league. But they're talented and they're young. The goalkeeper was 19, two of the back four are 21, Costa and Cavaleiro are new to the country and in their early 20s."
Harry Burgoyne was handed a shock debut with Carl Ikeme and Andy Lonergan both out injured.
Lambert, who said Ikeme could return at Cardiff City on Tuesday and revealed Nouha Dicko was a late doubt owing to being ill on Friday night, was full of praise for 19-year-old Shropshire-born Burgoyne, who was only told he was playing a couple of hours before kick off after being selected ahead of Jon Flatt.
"Officially it was this morning with Lonergan," he said of the keeper's knee injury. "Yesterday we knew he had a little problem.
"For Harry it was sink or swim. He had a big moment at 3-1 with a double save which was brilliant.
"His whole game was good for a young kid coming in. He's set a marker for himself and hopefully in years to come he'll have a good career.
"His handling and kicking was good. He had no chances with the goals. I always say good goalkeepers keep you in games at big moments and he had a big moment.
"Flatty has been on the bench recently and he's trained. Harry has played more games for the under-23s, that was the reason I picked him.
"He was on a high from the other night with his penalty saves. It was my call and that's what I went with."
In a game high on emotions Lambert also earned a telling off from the referee after leaping over the advertising hoardings to retrieve the ball.
The Wolves boss said: "Listen, if you think I'm going to cause a riot by jumping the billboard, Jesus, come on.
"If that's going to cause a riot we need to look at the whole game in general!
"The referee just said calm down. But it's not easy when you want your team to win and you want to get the ball back and get a goal."
