Wolves forward Joe Mason says goal is a monkey off his back

Joe Mason has revealed his relief at ending his Wolves goal drought – and is optimistic next season will be a different story for Kenny Jackett's team.

The £3million signing from Cardiff netted his first goal since February 13 in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest.

The strike ended a blank run of 12 appearances albeit just six of those were starts.

And the 24-year-old wants to end the season with another goal for Wolves this weekend against Sheffield Wednesday.

"It's a big relief – I'm not going to lie, it's been a while," Mason said.

"I've been itching to get one, it was nice to see it go in.

"I've had a few chances in recent weeks which are the sort of chances I usually take.

"It's a monkey off my back and I can kick on and hopefully get another next week.

"It's not my typical sort of goal – but I was really happy to score."

There's been plenty of talk about Mason's best position since his Molineux arrival, not least from boss Jackett who has spoken of the need for a physical striker playing alongside him.

However, Mason plans to bulk up over the summer and come back to lead the line for Wolves.

"Eventually I want to play as the furthest forward, and I'm happy to do it now," he said.

"I've usually played the deeper role, but I'll play wherever the manager wants me to. It's a tough one, I like playing both positions.

"I'm enjoying it, I'm getting chances.

"I've not been taking them of late, but I'm just happy to get the goal and I can kick on.

"I think physically I need to build myself up over the summer to come back as strong as possible and play as a number nine.

"We've talked about me going away in the summer and working hard on my physique. I'll be coming back as strong as possible to try and cement my place in the team."

And of Wolves' future next season, Mason added: "I'm very optimistic.

"There are a few tweaks here and there and we can have a go next season."
