Jez Moxey refuses to rule out Benik Afobe sale

Chief executive Jez Moxey has refused to rule out selling star Wolves striker Benik Afobe in January.

Wolves rejected three bids from Premier League side Norwich City in the summer for the 22-year-old, with the highest being £10m.

However since then owner Steve Morgan has put the club up sale – and Wolves are struggling on the pitch, marooned in 15th place in the Championship.

When asked during a meeting of the Wolves Fan's Parliament whether money would be spent in January, and if Afobe would be sold, Moxey said: "We are currently working to see what we can do in January...that's the acid test.

"We thought it was the best thing for the team at the time to refuse to sell Benik but we didn't seem to get much credit for having done so, likewise with refusing to sell (Bakary) Sako last January when we could have.

"Now, given the position of the club being up for sale, everything has to be up for debate and renewal.

"We'll have to think about it very carefully."

In August, when the Afobe speculation was at its height, Wolves issued a firm 'hands-off' warning stating he was not for sale, either then or throughout the current season.

The statement said: "Neither Benik nor any of Wolves' first team forward players, will be sold this season."

Also during the meeting, Moxey spoke of QPR's rumoured interest in boss Kenny Jackett.

Rangers are expected to announce that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is leaving Burton Albion to take charge at Loftus Road today, but reports in London suggested Jackett had also been on their shortlist.

Moxey said of the alleged interest: "Ken has said that Wolverhampton Wanderers is not a place you leave voluntarily.

"You only leave when someone tells you to.

"There has been no approach for him and an approach would not be welcomed."

And he gave Jackett a vote of confidence, adding: "Kenny Jackett retains our utmost confidence."

Moxey and others have been criticised for the way Sako's exit and subsequent lack of a replacement was handled, but the chief executive issued a rebuke.

He argued: "There has been criticism over the replacement of Sako but that's what we tried to do and we knew we had Jordan Graham who has been recruited earlier but wasn't ready at the start of the season.

"In summary, I think if any other team lost their three best attacking players (with Nouha Dicko injury and effect on Afobe), they too would struggle."
