Wolves left short after Mike Williamson heads back

Struggling Wolves face a defensive shortage for the next month after centre-half Mike Williamson was recalled by Newcastle United.

Williamson deeply impressed during his short stay but a hamstring injury to Newcastle's Jamaal Lascelles – combined with the North East club's dreadful recent form – has prompted Steve McClaren to call him back.

And with the emergency loan window having slammed shut last week Wolves cannot bring anyone in to replace Williamson until January.

That means they face six Championship matches – against Rotherham, Nottingham Forest, Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Reading and Charlton – with just five fit senior defenders.

Danny Batth, Dominic Iorfa, Matt Doherty, Scott Golbourne and Ethan Ebanks-Landell are available, with the latter having just recovered from a broken foot.

Kortney Hause is out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury.

Jackett said: "We understand the situation and we thank Steve McClaren and Newcastle for letting us take him on loan.

"We thank Mike as well and since he has been here we have kept three clean sheets in five games, only conceding three goals, which is a good record."
