Wandering around world in friendlies

There is no Wolves game this weekend, but a batch of their players are hoping to be in action on international duty.

Carl Ikeme faces a World Cup knockout double header with Nigeria, David Edwards will look to cement his place in the Wales squad when they take on the Netherlands in a friendly tomorrow night, while Dominic Iorfa has two Euro Under-21 qualifiers with England.

On-loan Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo is also in action for England Under-17s who have a friendly away at the Netherlands today before a home game against Japan at Manchester City's Academy Stadium on Sunday.

Ikeme's Nigeria play Swaziland away tomorrow night ahead of the return leg on Monday, with the winner going through to the African qualifying groups for Russia 2018.

The goalkeeper recently spoke of his pride at his new-found international career at the age of 29.

And boss Kenny Jackett said Ikeme – currently Nigeria's number one in the wake of Vincent Enyeama's retirement – had been handed a great opportunity.

"It's a great experience for him," Jackett said. "It's quite late in the day, but then goalkeepers do tend to have their best times going into their 30s.

"It's an opportunity he'll be really keen to take.

"It's also great to raise the profile of the club. He's been in and around it and been asking before. It's a big country and it does seem he has a chance and an opportunity."

Ikeme made his first league appearance since August when he replaced the injured Emiliano Martinez during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Burnley.

The extent of Martinez's thigh injury should be made clear in the coming days.

"He got a very good reaction coming on and that's great," Jackett said of Ikeme's substitute appearance.

"He's been a popular figure here down the years.

"He didn't have much to do when he did come on but he's an experienced goalkeeper.

"He'll be hungry to win that shirt back. We'd love to be as strong as that in other areas.

"As a club it'd be great to get that type of strength all over the pitch."

Meanwhile, Iorfa was hoping to start for England Under-21s today when they faced Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo at 12pm.

England then play Switzerland at Brighton's Amex Stadium on Monday at 5.45pm and the young right-back is keen to become a regular in the side.

Iorfa replaced Joe Gomez as a substitute in England's last game, but the Liverpool man is now out with a long-term injury.

"I'm hoping that I'll be one of the players to get a chance and if I do, I want to play well enough to give the manager a problem for when the injured players do come back and I can stay in the side," he said.
