Ikeme: We believe in Wolves promotion bid

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme says the squad has the belief to win promotion to the Premier League this year.

Ikeme and co agonisingly missed out on the Championship play-offs on goal difference last year.

But Wolves first choice shot-stopper is confident they will go one better this time around.

"I think we've got the players to do it," Ikeme told the Express & Star.

"We got so close last year, it was disappointing and I know we've lost Bakary Sako but we've got good players here and we all believe we're good enough to take it one step further than last year.

"It's going to be tough and we'll have tough periods but I'm confident in the squad and I feel like we've got the players to push on.

"Anybody who plays football wants to play in the Premier League and I'm no different, the club's no different. Hopefully we can achieve that this season."

Wolves have signed just two first team players this summer in Jed Wallace and Conor Coady,

And Ikeme said that while the current squad was certainly good enough to mount a challenge, any signings would be welcomed.

"I think a few more to add always brings competition and I don't think it would do us any harm," he said.

"The manager's trying to bring players in but we've got a good team here and new players will only benefit the club, so we'll see what he does in the transfer window."

Fellow keeper Aaron McCarey is available to play football again after his FA hearing over a failed drug test finally came to an end.

And Ikeme said he was delighted to welcome his team mate back into the fold.

"Aaron's a good lad and he's a good professional as well," he added.

"With the keepers you have a bond with each other.

"I've been with him a lot and seen what he's gone through so I'm as delighted as anyone that it's resolved and he can get on with his career."

Ikeme was expected to line up for Wolves in their latest pre-season friendly against Shrewsbury Town at Greenhous Meadow this afternoon.
