The 23-year-old shotstopper has been suspended by the Football Association after failing a drugs test for a non-performance enhancing substance.

McCarey was one of three footballers revealed over the weekend to have been banned for failing drugs tests after £8m Hull City midfielder Jake Livermore and Sheffield United striker Jose Baxter.

Wolves issued a statement saying: "Aaron McCarey has failed an out of competition Football Association (FA) drug test for a non-performance enhancing substance.

"As a result, the Wolves goalkeeper is now subject to an immediate FA suspension from all competitive forms of football.

"The immediate suspension is a standard procedure whilst the FA's investigation is concluded.

"Aaron McCarey strenuously denies deliberately taking any banned substance.

"The club is extremely disappointed and concerned that one of its players has failed a drugs test.

"Neither the player nor the club will be making any further comment whilst the FA investigation is underway and not until the matter has been fully concluded."

McCarey, who has had loan spells with Walsall, AFC Telford United and York City, didn't feature on the bench for Wolves' last two games of the season when first choice Carl Ikeme was injured and his absence was explained by the club as being for family reasons.

He is a former Ireland Under-21 international who has a year left on his contract and has played seven first-team games for Wolves, but none since last August, a 3-2 home defeat to Northampton in the Capital One Cup.

McCarey joined Wolves from Irish League side Monaghan United in January 2010, having agreed to sign in September 2009.

Livermore, who has made one appearance for England, failed a post-match drug test after Hull's 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on April 25, and although he played in the 1-0 defeat by Burnley last weekend, the club had no choice but to ban him once they were informed of the test result.

A club statement said: "Following suspension by the FA the club has subsequently suspended Jake Livermore pending further investigations to be made by the FA and our own internal disciplinary procedures."

Sheffield United said in a statement about Baxter: "The club has learned one of its players, Jose Baxter, was found to have traces of a banned substance in his sample following a routine Football Association out of competition drug test.

"The player has informed the club he engaged in no wrongdoing involving any banned substance.

"Established policy in these circumstances requires that the club temporarily suspend the player pending further findings.

"The club has taken this step without prejudice to the player's claim of no wrongdoing."
