Kenny Jackett: No get-out clause for Sako

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett today admitted they have never discussed a get-out clause with Bakary Sako - as Albion look set to target him again.

Ten years ago, Wolves persuaded Joleon Lescott to sign a new deal with a gentleman's agreement.

They promised he could leave in 12 months' time if Wolves weren't promoted and a Premier League club came in for him.

Lescott was sold to Everton for £5m plus a £2m sell-on when he was transferred to Manchester City in 2009.

But the level of Sako's wages and the club's finances - around £25,000-a-week - effectively prevented any chance of a repeat scenario.

Sako earns way more than any other Wolves player apart from Kevin Doyle after they slashed the wage bill following the double relegation.

Albion, who were one of three clubs that had bids of around £2m rejected in January with QPR and an un-named foreign club, could easily trump his current salary.

Jackett indicated the idea of a new deal with a clause was a non-starter. "There's been no discussion about a new contract with any type of clause in," said the boss.

"From the club's point of view, I don't think that would have been beneficial to us."

The Baggies look like returning for the winger this summer when Sako is out of contract and available on a Bosman free transfer.

But Jackett believes such is the bond between Sako, the fans and the club that he could still remain at Wolves beyond June 30.

"I think Wolves will be an option in whatever division," said Jackett. "But the the way our season goes will have a big bearing on that.

"It would depend on what offers he has - stay in this country or move abroad - and where he and his family want to be."

Jackett is confident Sako will remain focused on Wolves' promotion push in the meantime however.

"We still have our season ahead of us and we're all focusing on that, Sako included," said the boss.

"He'll be committed and will continue to push for promotion right the way until the end and while it's still possible," he said.

"He played very well in our last game against Derby."
