Young stars inspired Kenny Jackett to take Wolves job
Kenny Jackett today revealed the chance to work with Wolves' youngsters was a big factor in him taking the job.
Chairman Steve Morgan told the Shropshire Star at the weekend that hearing the Molineux head coach say he wanted to promote several under-21 players this season was music to his ears.
Jackett admitted in the summer that he tried to sign three of the club's promising young players in Matt Doherty, Danny Batth and David Davis when he was Millwall manager.
And the boss admitted the chance to work with the trio and the rest of the impressive Wolves cubs was a huge attraction of the job.
"I was keen to work with all these players and was very much looking forward to it," said Jackett.
"I do see good potential in them and some of the lads have started off well in the team.
"There's a fleeting glimpse of some promise for players and supporters."
Jackett admits the players have set high standards which must continue to be met if Wolves are to achieve their goal of promotion this season.
"We must meet these standards and show the consistency, professionalism and attention to detail against what will be a very motivated division against Wolves," he said.
"Their challenge now is to carry it on after some promise and go on and have a successful season."
"It's still very early days and while there is some promise and encouragement for the future, that's all there is at the moment.
"That's nice, and good for the players to see as a group they're capable and also very important for the supporters to have an idea five games in whether they're in for an optimistic season or a pessimistic one."
Jackett admits he had no idea how big a gamble it was going to be promoting so many youngsters into what has become a predominantly young squad.
"It's a lot clearer now two or three months into the job than when I arrived in June when the picture looked a little bit different for everybody," he said. "It certainly is for me.
"I'd watched the Under-21s play and they had a successful season.
"But all of this wasn't League One and in the first team.
"I had a good idea but it was quite fractured in terms of where the players were and the experience they had – it was quite wide ranging."
