Wolves yet to approach Crewe's Steve Davis

Wolves have yet to approach Crewe for clearance to speak to manager Steve Davis – despite runaway speculation he is Molineux-bound.

Davis is sticking by his pledge to his League One employers that he would not be applying for the Molineux post and the chance to lead the team he supported as a boy back up the League.

But despite being installed favourite ahead of Kenny Jackett and Steve McClaren, Wolves have made no strides towards landing him.

The Birmingham-born 47-year-old still remains more of an outsider due to his relative inexperience.

Davis had heard nothing and trusts his relationship with Crewe chairman John Bowler.

Davis told the Express & Star: "We have a relationship I trust and an understanding that if there were anything of interest to tell me about, the chairman would do so.

"I have not heard a thing from him so I have nothing to discuss."

Nevertheless, the successor to the legendary Dario Gradi continues to attract support and has now been endorsed by the man he succeeded at Gresty Road.

Gradi said: "Steve has done a great job and he and his assistant, Neil Baker, work well together. They are a good combination and have worked hard to bring success to the club.

"I am not surprised his name crops up when jobs are mentioned because his record is very good. He has won a promotion, won a cup and finished halfway in the league above.

"Steve is unflappable and knows how the club works. He knows he has to make the money we lose by promoting young players and selling them on."

Developing young players is a key element of the head coach role. But handling the Molineux pressure pot, and a restless demand for promotion, remains a priority after such a bitterly-criticised two-year slump.

And, despite overtaking Jackett and former England manager McClaren as a bookies front-runner, Davis's comparative inexperienced and low-profile is seen as a handicap.

Chief executive Jez Moxey is back at his desk after holiday now directing the second phase of the search following director of football Kevin Thelwell's groundwork last week.

But Moxey refused to make any comment about his progress and said the club would continue to operate in "radio silence" until a decision was made.
