Midfielder Karl Henry was this afternoon named Wolves captain ahead of tomorrow's Championship opener at Leeds.

Henry, who signed a new four-year deal this week to take him to a decade's service at Molineux, was the obvious choice as manager Stale Solbakken's first Wolves captain after skippering the side whenever he was on the pitch in pre-season.

The Wolverhampton-born 29-year-old captained Wolves from 2008-12, leading the team to the Championship title in 2009 along with Jody Craddock.

Former boss Mick McCarthy's decision to take the armband off him this time last year and hand it to Roger Johnson proved controversial and upset the dressing room.

But Henry, who has played 232 games for Wolves after being signed for a bargain £100,000 from Stoke in 2006, battled away and had arguably his best season in the Premier League before being awarded the captaincy by Terry Connor towards the end of the relegation campaign.

Meanwhile, Matt Jarvis is set to at Elland Road as the transfer sagas that have dominated Wolves' pre-season hit deadlock.

The wantaway winger is in Solbakken's plans for the lunchtime televised clash after Wolves turned down West Ham's £6.5m bid for him yesterday.

But Steven Fletcher, who has seen bids of up to £13m from Sunderland rejected, will not be risked after his ankle injury.

"Matt Jarvis will be involved – but I said the same this time last week!" said Solbakken.

"Fletcher won't be involved and that has nothing to do with the transfer. He completed his first session yesterday, so we must see if there's any reaction."

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce said of the Jarvis deal: "It's stuck. We've got to try to agree something with Wolves."

Solbakken said the wantaway stars also now have to be prepared to stay.

"Of course they should," he said. "What other option would they have? Whether it's likely I don't know.

"Some will feel hard done by after the window shuts and some will be satisfied."
