Steve Morgan fights back tears as Wolves fans protest
Wolves chairman Steve Morgan was close to tears as he addressed angry protesters after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.
Wolves chairman Steve Morgan was close to tears as he addressed angry protesters after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Blackburn.
Morgan confronted a 40-strong mob an hour-and-a-half after the game outside Molineux after several hundred who had gathered had dispersed.
The multi-millionaire listened to the fans, who claimed the players hadn't given their all for the cause, before responding in an exchange which lasted several minutes. He then climbed into his silver Mercedes and drove away.
Fans blame Morgan for failing to appoint an experienced manager when he sacked Mick McCarthy.
He repeated his claim that the job had only been offered to one man – Alan Curbishley. This is despite Walter Smith saying he had been offered the job to the end of the season and Steve Bruce claiming a meeting had been set up with a view to installing him as the next manager.
Morgan admitted: "We could all be perfect managers with the benefit of hindsight."
Supporters also blamed him for not spending enough money on players, which he countered by saying that Wolves have spent more than any other club outside the top six.
Fans in the South Bank had unfurled a banner during the game demanding 'Scouse mafia out' and he asked them to stop criticising Scousers, saying that it had got nothing to do with the situation.
Morgan was flanked throughout by two security men and the police were nearby so there was never any chance of the situation getting out of hand.
In a statement issued yesterday, the club also said Morgan never said the job was offered to Bruce.
Manager Terry Connor said: "It hurts us all when the fans are discontented.
"We're all employees of the football club so if there is a protest going on and it's a protest against the football club then it's against all of us.
"Everybody concerned – we're all in it together."
