Wolves today moved into pole position for Barnsley winger Adam Hammill after hammering Doncaster 5-0 in the FA Cup last night.

Mick McCarthy's men have jumped ahead of Blackpool and Nottingham Forest in the queue for the former Liverpool winger and the 22-year-old looks set for a Molineux move.

Wolves are ready to offer the midfielder £20,000-a-week in a bid to see off the Seasiders who are keen on the wideman having had him on loan two years ago.

Although it is still to be confirmed that Wolves have matched the £500,000 buy-out clause in his contract, Hammill was reported to be having a medical at Compton last night.

Wolves' extra spending power on the Tangerines gives them the edge over Blackpool in the race for Hammill.

Barnsley fans, via messageboards, have claimed Hammill told them after training yesterday that he was signing for Wolves.

But with Everton understood to be keen on the Merseysider, and in the wake of Steve Sidwell's decision to sign for Fulham while he was undergoing his Wolves medical, manager McCarthy remains highly cautious of any signings this month, with only 12 days of the window left.

"We're not really close to anything," said the boss after last night's 5-0 win.

"We've tried and been thwarted on a number of occasions.

"The best news for me is getting the lads back like Jody and Karl.

"Dave Edwards and Sylvan will be back shortly and they're good players for me."

  • Meanwhile Leigh Griffiths will play his last game for Dundee against Falkirk on Saturday before moving to Molineux.
