The New Saints looking to go marching on

The New Saints look to stretch their unbeaten run to six games in the JD Welsh Premier when they make their longest trek of the season to Carmarthen Town tomorrow.

After an opening day loss, the defending champions have got back on track with 13 points from their next five league outings.

After a few days at the top of the table, they journey to West Wales in second place, two points adrift of Bangor City who took over pole position with a 1-0 midweek victory over Connah’s Quay Nomads.

Keen to keep up the pressure on the leaders, the Saints will be wary that Carmarthen have often proved tough opposition on their notoriously wet and heavy conditions at Richmond Park.

But it has been all change this summer, with the Old Gold becoming the ninth of 12 teams in the league to install a 3G surface – and tomorrow sees its first competitive game on the new pitch.

TNS manager Scott Ruscoe anticipates a stern test. He said:

“It’s always a tough game against Carmarthen. We’ve had some big wins against them, but they’ve also beaten us a few times as well.

“They have had a difficult start (with five defeats in six outings), but went to Bala the other week and won 4-0, so are no mugs and are capable of beating anyone on their day.

“Our players will know what’s expected of them. We got ourselves back on the top of the league last week, and that’s where we want to be.”
