Bring on Celtic says The New Saints' Craig Harrison
The New Saints will discover their opponents in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round on Monday – and big guns Celtic are top of their wish list.
When the draw is made in Nyon, Switzereland, the Welsh Premier champions have a realistic chance of being paired with the runaway Scottish League title winners now managed by Norwegian Ronnie Deila.
As well as the prospect of an all-British showdown against Celtic, the Saints could also be drawn again against Legia Warsaw. They met the Polish champions last season and were beaten 4-1 on aggregate.
"Celtic is the stand-out tie, that's the one we want, but there's also a chance of meeting Legia Warsaw again which I think will even harder with all the travelling," said Craig Harrison.
"There's one or two sides in there which we've got a chance with, so it's going to be an interesting draw."
Amongst other possible opponents are Czech champions Sparta Prague and a trip to Bratislava to face Slovak Champions, Slovan Bratislava. Latvian champions Ventspils are also a possible opponent and, if paired with each other, the two teams would be facing one another for the second time, having first met in 2007. The Saints triumphed 3-2 in the first leg on that occasion, but lost 2-1 in the away leg to narrowly bow out on away goals.
HJK, from Helsinki, Finland, could be another potential opponent for Craig Harrison's men in what is set to be a fascinating draw in Switzerland.
The first leg of the second qualifying round is scheduled to take place on either July 15-16, with the second leg a week later on either July 22-23.
The Saints have been back in training for two-and-a-half weeks, and had their first practice match amongst themselves on Tuesday with a 45-minute run out.
Harrison, meanwhile, is still looking to bolster his squad ahead of the European tie, but has had to bide his time.
He said: "I'm still looking for one of two players but, with my targets playing in the English system, they finished their season later than us and have only just got back from holiday."
