Crewe 3 Shrewsbury 2 - Player ratings

Lewis Cox gives his player ratings following the final day defeat at Crewe.

Published

Harry Burgoyne

An uncomfortable afternoon for the goalkeeper. He was helpless to deal with Mandron’s early double, but almost let a Dale drive squeeze through and should have done better for the late winner.

Errors 5

Matthew Pennington

Saw his clearance cannon off another body to drop nicely for Mandron’s second but made other decent blocks, clearing off the line, and went close with good second-half header.

Mixed 6

Ethan Ebanks-Landell

Didn’t appear to be overly stretched from the Crewe frontline after Town recovered from a ragged start. Used the ball when from the back.

Composed 6

Aaron Pierre

Will have felt between himself and Ogbeta that Town could have been tighter for Mandron’s first, but that aside Pierre grew into the contest well and was a strong presence.

Headers 6

David Davis

Gave another honest account of himself out of position at right wing-back. Always an option supporting attack. Crewe did sneak through his side of the box for the winner.

Willing 7

Ollie Norburn

Grew into the contest well and looked really high on confidence towards the end of the first half with some excellent use of the ball, including a sublime pass for Udoh’s goal.

Vision 7

Josh Vela

Looked like having a rare off-day early on but recovered well and by the finale he was everywhere trying to push Town to a late winner.

Tireless 7

Sean Goss

A first start in a month after injury was eventful for the out-of-contract midfielder. Got caught for Crewe’s opener and shanked a few strikes from distance but a lovely pass made Whalley’s first. Mixed bag.

Got about 6

Nathanael Ogbeta

One of the more subdued displays from the youngster. Looked out of position for Mandron’s first goal and the hosts seemed to shackle his threat down their right.

Thwarted 6

Shaun Whalley

A moment of brilliant from the Town favourite to curl a brilliant finish high into the corner to give Salop hope. He was lively, sharp and tireless from the side. What a boost that he is staying at the club.

Threat 7

Daniel Udoh

The striker was handed a final chance to impress the boss and will be pleased with his efforts at his former club. Subdued until a wicked take and finish for the equaliser. Was strong otherwise and at times held it up well for Town.

Strong 7

Substitutes

Dave Edwards (for Whalley, 78) Couldn’t quite turn in late chance. Tom Bloxham (for Ogbeta, 85) Claimed a late penalty for handball. Subs not used: Bevan, Love, Williams, Walker, Chapman.
