Shrewsbury Town academy star Lewis Duberry receives senior international call-up from Montserrat
Exciting Shrewsbury Town under-18s midfielder Lewis Duberry has received an international call-up to represent Montserrat at senior level.
Duberry will jet off later this month in the hope of making his senior international bow having represented the Caribbean island at youth level.
The 18-year-old is formerly of Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers at junior level and made the switch to Shropshire to join Shrewsbury's academy at under-16 level. It caps off a memorable few days for the midfielder, who only turned 18 this week.
He is a second-year scholar and is waiting to see if he will be rewarded for his progress with a first senior first-team deal this summer.
Duberry, a combative and skilful central midfielder, has caught the eye and trained with the Shrewsbury first team in recent months. Former academy boss David Longwell is now coaching at Town first team level, with boss Steve Cotterill still absent.
The midfield talent, who hails from the London-Essex border, has developed robustly in his time at Shrewsbury and is believed to have been watched by several clubs in his performances for the under-18s this season.
The academy has recently been taken on by Max Rogers, vacating the role fellow Scot Longwell left when moving into first team duties.
Duberry's Montserrat, for whom he qualifies through his family on both sides, will compete in World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Antigua and El Salvador at the end of March.
The midfielder is a relative of former Chelsea and Leeds defender Michael.
It has been a good week for Town's under-18s at senior level as goalkeeper Jaden Bevan joined the first team in their trip to Rochdale on Tuesday. Bevan was not involved among the matchday squad but helped warm up Harry Burgoyne and Matija Sarkic.
Shrewsbury's under-18s beat Walsall 2-1 on Tuesday, with Bevan in goal, with highly-rated striker Charlie Caton and Ethan O'Toole on target.
Fellow striker Tom Bloxham has also made his senior debut this season, coming on as a substitute in the EFL Trophy.
First-team goalkeeper Sarkic has also been called by to his international duty, he will represent Montenegro later this month.
