Shrewsbury Town boss Sam Ricketts: Draw was the least we deserved
Sam Ricketts felt his Shrewsbury Town side were well worthy of their point against Scunthorpe and praised their character to clinch a dramatic point.
Town drew level with six minutes remaining after being behind for more than an hour after Kyle Wootton gave relegation-battling Scunthorpe a first-half lead.
It looked as if Shrews would be plunged deeper into uncertainty after last week's fine win at Southend but a number of balls into the box took their toll on the Iron as the ball went in off unfortunate winger Adam Hammill.
But Shrews were worthy of their point earned on the balance of play. The Iron were buying time, which frustrating Ricketts and his side, and Salop looked the only team interested in attacking and then finding a winner.
The boss, whose side moved up one place to 14th and remain four points clear of the drop zone - on 47 points - said: "Ultimately I thought it was the least we deserved from the game. We were the ones asking the vast majority of questions.
"We kept pressing, virtually the whole second half was played in our attacking half.
"We kept pushing, made changes to get going and pushing the players' drive to go until the very end.
"There was only ever going to be one winner, certainly after we equaliser but even before.
"We didn't give ourselves a mountain to climb, because 1-0 is not a mountain, but we gave them something to cling to."
Ricketts, who used an unchanged side from the team that won at Southend, added: "For the vast majority we were on the front foot. Yes we didn't carve them open with chance after chance.
"But Doch (Greg Docherty) goes through at the start of the game. Good strike, if he lifts it it's in. Fey (Okenabirhie) similarly who decided not to shoot first-time which is unlike him.
"If we go 1-0 up we go on and win very comfortably.
"We gave a goal away which is hugely disappointing but the character to turn, drive, move the ball and ask questions is very, very pleasing."
Ricketts felt Shrewsbury, who next week go to Gillingham, the side directly above them, played better than in last week's victory.
"I saw a real opportunity to put another stamp on the league like last week," he continued.
"I thought our performance was better than last week but we didn't get the same result.
"Last week we won both boxes taking our chances and not conceding. This week the boxes were 50-50 which is why it ended 1-1."
