Shrewsbury Town face anxious wait on results of James Bolton scan

Shrewsbury Town face an anxious wait on the results of a scan after James Bolton sustained a freak ankle injury during the week.

The defender, who was a key part of Sam Ricketts' back three that managed back-to-back clean sheets for the first time since October against Doncaster and AFC Wimbledon, turned his ankle during a routine gym session.

He was forced out of Town's disappointing 2-1 defeat at fellow relegation battlers Rochdale yesterday as Town await the news from his scan.

Ricketts revealed the injury came as a blow to his side after they had found a defensive formula that had kept opposition at bay. The injury looks likely to keep out the Shrews stopped for at least Tuesday's long trip to Plymouth.

The Town boss said: "It's really disappointing. A freak accident in the gym doing some gym work, he went over on his ankle.

"We sent him for a scan and he wasn't going to make (Rochdale). Hopefully it's not too bad.

"It's a real disappointment because we've come off the back of two clean sheets and a settled back line, unfortunately we had to change it through what was a freak injury.

"It's a bitter one to take after forming a good back three. I hope it's not long-term, we're waiting to see on the scan."

Omar Beckles came in for Bolton on the left side of Town's back three, with skipper Mat Sadler remaining on the bench.

It was Beckles' first start in a fortnight having not featured since the win at Peterborough. He proved a threat in Rochdale's box with a couple of headers, both of which were well saved by Dale keeper Andy Lonergan.
