Sam Ricketts faces a tough head-versus-heart decision on Dave Edwards' fitness for Shrewsbury's FA Cup tie against Wolves
Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts admits he faces a tough decision on Dave Edwards' fitness for Saturday's giant FA Cup clash against Wolves.
Edwards could face a romantic reunion with the Molineux club he served for nine years, just weeks after sealing his Shrewsbury Town following a 12-year absence.
The Welshman had been struggling with a knee problem all season, thus not featuring for former club Reading in the Championship but was intent on building his fitness upon penning a Montgomery Waters Meadow deal.
However, after coming on 12 minutes from time in the 3-0 defeat against Charlton, Edwards tweaked his groin and has since been sidelined. Ricketts is wary of rushing the 32-year-old back and risking a longer-term injury.
The midfielder is back out on the grass at Sundorne Castle today with a view to making training later in the week.
Ricketts concedes there is a head-versus-heart element to Edwards' possible inclusion among the substitutes on Saturday.
When asked if his first Town signing was fit, the boss replied: "Yes and no. He's gradually stepping up this week fitness-wise.
"He's not training today, he may train towards the end of the week. It's a tough one because as much as everyone would love him to be involved I don't want to rush him back in and be out for longer.
"So we'll have to assess things as the week goes on.
"It is (head or heart). It's heart for a few minutes and then something could happen again – and he'd rather be fit for for the rest of the season than rush back for one game.
"Football's a funny thing how it works out sometimes.
"Of course he is (desperate to play), but if you're injured then you're injured, there's not a lot you can do about it."
