Welshman Amadi-Holloway thundered in a bullet header to earn compatriot Ricketts a first win as Town boss against Coventry on Saturday and caught the eye with a powerful display.

Ricketts heaped praise on his giant frontman, suggesting that the summer signing does not appreciate his ability and potential.

The boss and the rest of Shrewsbury’s staff will work closely with Amadi-Holloway in order to boost his belief.

“He’s playing really well now. I just see as a former defender that I wouldn’t want to play against him!” Ricketts said.

“I’m just trying to teach him what I wouldn’t want to happen to me as much as anything. That’s not just me, it’s the other staff as well.

“We have a fantastic staff who go above and beyond in every aspect. We try and cover every aspect – video, on the training pitch, talking – to make sure we maximise our growth.”

Amadi-Holloway, 25, joined from Oldham in the summer, but had to wait until late November for his first goal. Since though, he has netted three times in six outings.

Ricketts continued: “First and foremost he’s a really nice guy. Really down to earth, gets on with his job quietly, wants to improve and work hard.

“He does extra physical work after training because he feels like he needs to do that.

“The most important thing for me is his character, on top of that he has undoubted ability. Sometimes players have an inflated opinion of themselves and sometimes players are the opposite and Aaron falls into that one.”
