Shrewsbury boss John Askey has hinted he is likely to use the same system again in a bid for consistency as Town attempt to build some momentum at Oxford tomorrow.

The Town chief tweaked his formula on Tuesday to use a 3-5-2 formation for the first time in League One this season.

Shaun Whalley’s absence through a calf injury helped the boss settle on that system, which uses wing-backs as width.

“You’re looking to get a settled formation and get players playing for their places,” said Askey.

“Hopefully we can do that. But that only comes with winning.

“You pick systems to try and suit the players that you’ve got and on Tuesday, with the players we had out, that suited them best.

“With Shaun being out then it really gave me the opportunity to do that.”

The Town boss insists he is not distracted by a run of six league games against clubs positioned further down the League One standings.

He stressed it was more important Town focused on getting themselves three points.

“It’s more us looking at ourselves and getting wins. I’m not too concerned about other teams,” he added.

“If we’re winning games then we don’t have to worry. It’s more us wanting to get as high as we possibly can.”
