Winger Alex Gilliead is hoping a few spells in ‘finishing school’ will help him break his Shrewsbury Town scoring duck.

The 22-year-old flyer, who signed from Newcastle in the summer, has been working on his shooting and finishing with John Askey and his staff at Sundorne Castle.

Gilliead has yet to get off the mark in Town colours. He did help Salop get off to a flying start last time out against Southend at Montgomery Waters Meadow, by creating the opener for Greg Docherty.

“The gaffer, myself and a few of the lads work on it in training each day, it is something I need to improve on to help the team and chip in more,” said Gilliead.

The winger hit just two goals in 58 appearances across two loan spells with Bradford City and admitted on his Town arrival he was eyeing a much better return.

“It’s something I need to improve on and something I’m trying to improve on in training and in games,” added the wideman.

“As long as I’m in the right positions and trying to do things right then it’ll come. I do set myself targets, I have a little note I make back in the flat, but I keep those to myself. I think as long as I continue playing, I’m sure it’ll come.”

Gilliead is feeling in confident mood as he targets back-to-back home wins by beating Gillingham today. He added: “After we got the win against Southend we felt that a lot more would come. Last week was a bit of a blip but we’re gelling more, and we’ll start progressing up the league.”
