John Askey frustrated as Luton come from behind to beat Shrewsbury Town

Frustrated Shrewsbury boss John Askey criticised his side for a second half capitulation as Town failed to take a 'golden opportunity' and seal a first win.

Askey's men led twice at Luton but came out on the wrong side of the odd goal in five as Luton edged the thriller.

Town led at the break and at 2-1 - as Lee Angol marked his full debut with a bizarre goal - but shipped two goals in three minutes, in a half Askey said was not good enough.

"It's disappointing. I thought we were given a golden opportunity to get the three points so to get nothing having led I'm not happy," said the boss.

"We were doing well (in the first half), limited them to very few chances. We got the penalty and looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

"We stopped closing them down and allowed them too much time on the ball. It was as though we were hoping we were going to win instead of making sure we won."

Two of Luton's three second-half goals were free-kicks from almost identical positions. Jorge Grant sent the first into the top corner while the third - and winner - took a wicked deflection leaving Joel Coleman grounded.

The keeper made a save from the penalty spot later on to deny James Collins and Luton a fourth.

The boss added: "If you keep dropping then there's always a possibility, especially when you have players who are clever and go over at the slightest touch.

"If you get up then that doesn't happen. Obviously the third goal is a fluke but that's how it's going at the moment.

"In the first half we deserved something but the second half wasn't good enough. You can;'t have people switching off like that.

"They get told and told but not tracking back and taking positions is not good enough."

Askey felt some of his players capitulated in the second half instead of digging in.

He continued: "We've been improving and we saw that first half. Second half they get a goal and put us under a little bit of pressure.

"Instead of digging in and fighting I think one or two capitulated a little bit.

"It's always a concern. It's been a concern coming into this game. I thought it was a good opportunity to get the three points.

"If we got the three points then we'd have been sitting in a reasonable position for the first five games.

"It's very disappointing but I've learned about one or two today and it's up to me to try and put it right."
