The forward, who opened his account for the season by scoring Town’s first goal under John Askey in Saturday’s loss at Charlton, is ready to ruffle some feathers after shaping up over the course of his debut season and the summer.

John-Lewis, 29, signed by Paul Hurst last summer, made all 34 of his league appearances last season from the bench.

But the former Newport man stressed he has returned in mint condition this season and it targeting goals and starts under Askey.

“One hundred per cent I’m feeling fitter and stronger than last season,” said John-Lewis, who is expected to be involved against Burton in the Carabao Cup tonight.

“I’m a lot fitter than last season and it’s probably the fittest I’ve been for a very long time – confidence-wise as well within my body.

“I’m raring to go, really raring to go.

“It’s been over the season to be honest. Last season was a stepping stone for that. The previous gaffer recognised that.

“For me now, this off season and pre-season, I’ve felt really, really good. I just want to hit the ground running.”

John-Lewis, who had a serious knee injury while at former club Newport, feels he was unable to give a true account of himself last season.

“There’s definitely a lot I want to show – not to myself – but to the fans, my team-mates and any onlookers. It’s for me to prove it,” the frontman added.

“I am to bring people into play and definitely ruffle a few feathers in the centre-half department. Hopefully I’ll get goals as well.

“It’s important that when you get your chance you take it and you keep it.

“The gaffer said before that if you do that, then there’s no reason why you’re not going to be in the team. For me it’s important to take my chance.”
