Trio of trialists not taken on by Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town will not be pursuing the three trialists they took on last week's warm-weather training camp to Valencia.

Goalkeepers Jake Kean and Nick Townsend, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, joined John Askey and his Town squad in Spain for a week of training.

Also out in Valencia was ex-Manchester United midfielder Devonte Redmond.

But the trio failed to impress Askey and his staff and are no longer training with Shrewsbury.

Askey is still searching for senior goalkeepers and expects to have another trialist in towards the end of the week.

The boss has invited three more trialists to join Town in training at Sundorne Castle from today. The three will take part in tomorrow's behind-closed-doors warm-up friendly with Kidderminster Harriers.

He said: "We had one or two in and as yet there's nobody who I've seen that would improve us.

"But today we've got three or four coming in and hopefully one or two of those will show us what they can do.

"They've all got Football League experience and are all decent players. We're lucky they're coming in on trial so it gives me a chance to get to know them as people and see what they can do in one or two games."

Askey sees the trial system as important to clubs like Shrewsbury and hopes that at least one deal pays off.

He added: "We have to use it. If you can get people in then it's the best way to do it.

"There are players out there you won't be able to do that with but with one or two coming in on trial you usually get at least one that lands.

"It'll be interesting to see how they do."
