Carlton Morris's Wembley return hope with Shrewsbury after rugby taster

Hot-shot Carlton Morris is aiming for a first football experience of Wembley – after once gracing the turf with a different shaped ball.

Morris, who was born in Cambridge, took to the national football stadium at half-time of a rugby match with his school peers as they got a taster of the big time.

He soon realised football was his calling and the Norwich loanee is expected to lead the line as Paul Hurst’s team look to make the Checkatrade Trophy final tonight by seeing off last four rivals Yeovil.

“I went once when I was younger with the rugby team, not for football,” said Morris. “It was with the school rugby team, we played on a quarter of the pitch at half-time in a game, for five minutes.

“I was never going to be a rugby player. There is far too much contact in that sport for me!

“It was not serious really. Just kick the ball up and run to the end was pretty much it.

“I just ran as fast as I could and if I couldn’t run around them then I just ran into them but I was never going to take it further.”

Powerful frontman Morris, 22, has eight goals for Hurst’s side this season and has been the boss’s first-choice striker in recent months. The childhood Tottenham fan insists Wembley remains a ‘special’ place for players to perform, especially for first-timers.

“It’s definitely a very special place to go for a lot of people around our squad and in the lower leagues that haven’t had the chance to go there before,” he added.

“It would be a really positive day. A day out in London and Wembley, but we need to concentrate on Yeovil first.

“We’ve had Morecambe and Aldershot come here and dealt with them in a professional manner. We hope for more of that.”
