A makeshift sign reading 'Paul Hurst Way' has appeared in the middle of Meole Brace island, near to the club's Meadow base.

Hurst and Town head into 2018 looking to remain in the League One automatic promotion positions.

They secured 23 wins from 46 league games in the calendar year. Town sit on 51 points, the amount they secured in the entirety of 2016/17.

And Town started the new year in the best possible fashion with a 1-0 victory at home to struggling Oldham Athletic, with Shaun Whalley netting the winner.

Despite not being official, Shropshire Council are happy for the sign to stay in place and have encouraged anyone who wants to officially name a street to get in touch.

A statement said: "It’s brilliant to see Shrewsbury Town doing so well this season and this sign is a great response to how well the team is doing.

"Though it’s not an official sign we’re very happy for it to remain in place until the end of the season, when we hope Shrewsbury will be celebrating promotion.

"If anyone would like to officially name a street or section of footpath after Paul Hurst, we encourage them to contact the council’s street naming and numbering team by email on snn@shropshire.gov.uk."

Hurst took over rock-bottom Town in October 2016. His magnificent turnaround has seen the team spend a chunk of the first half of this season top of the pile, when originally tipped for the drop.
