Shrewsbury Town's Ben Godfrey's three-match ban upheld

Midfielder Ben Godfrey will serve his three-game Checkatrade Trophy ban after the FA upheld his suspension.

The on-loan Norwich man was shown a controversial straight red card by referee Trevor Kettle in Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat against Walsall.

Boss Paul Hurst disagreed with the decision after the full-time whistle and Town lodged an appeal with the governing body on Wednesday.

But the ban has been upheld, meaning Godfrey will miss the next three Trophy ties, should Town progress.

The decision drew yet more anger from chief executive Brian Caldwell, who thought the footage clearly shows Godfrey wins the ball.

"We're all really disappointed with that decision," said Cadlwell. "We've taken a bit of a kicking from the FA this week.

"I think when you look at the footage and slow it down to 25 per cent you can see that Ben actually gets to the ball first.

"I can understand from the referee's view in live action if the player had got to the ball first and Ben's caught the player but it's not the case if you slow the footage down – we hoped common sense would prevail.

"They've turned that down as well, upheld the referee's decision when to me it seemed a very clear-cut case."

Caldwell is unhappy after Shrewsbury were not given full clarification over the decision.

He said: "They did say yesterday that they'd come back to us with the full reasons for why they upheld the decision but 24 hours later we're still waiting on that.

"They've said they they'll come back to us on Monday. They must be too busy at the FA to give clubs understandings so we know how they've come to these decisions.

"It absolutely baffles me in the last 24 hours."
