Paul Hurst saluted his battling Shrewsbury Town squad for going down fighting as their long, unbeaten run was finally snatched from them.

Peterborough United edged to a 1-0 victory at London Road, but Hurst's side - who were one game from equalling a club record unbeaten Football League run - remain top of League One.

A flurry of late attacks weren't enough for the visitors, who had previously struggled to fashion scoring opportunities.

But the boss maintained his pride as the 15-game run came to an end.

"I'm proud of the players," he said. "If we're going to lose a game of football then that's how to lose it.

"They were clinging on for large parts of that game. I thought they started well, we were maybe guilty of inviting a little bit of pressure on by trying to play too much early on.

"But there's no complaints. You can see by the fans and it's born out of what they've seen, it just wouldn't drop for us.

"The only criticism I can have is not making the goalkeeper work for the amount of pressure we've had."

Town were missing Junior Brown, who will be absent for the entire season, while Mat Sadler picked up an illness on the morning of the game.

Hurst noted the Posh's ambition, despite a six game winless run, as a marker of where his side - tipped for the drop before the season started - had come.

"Ultimately we've seen what it means for a team to beat little old Shrewsbury," he added. "That's massive credit for the players and how far they've come in a short space of time.

"To come to a team like Peterborough, who have got their own ambitions of the play-offs, to be clinging on is credit to us."

On Marcus Maddison's wondergoal, the boss said: "It's a great strike, you can't get away from that, it's a small learning curve for Dean Henderson as good as a strike it was."
