Shrewsbury boss Paul Hurst has explained the reasons for allowing Zak Jules out on loan and cutting short Dan James’s stay at Town.

Jules has joined League Two Chesterfield until January and made his debut in Saturday’s goalless draw with Coventry.

James returned to Swansea after his loan was cancelled, the 19-year-old winger having failed to feature in any of Hurst’s matchday squads.

The Meadow boss admits the signing of defender Omar Beckles meant Jules’s chances of forcing his way in were further reduced.

“Zak’s a young player that has had some good experience in terms of being at Reading, on loan at Motherwell and with Scotland Under-20s” said Hurst. “But if you really look at it, how many league games has he had?

“With bringing Omar in, I felt his progress may have been halted.

“I could have kept him here but, when Chesterfield showed interest, I thought it was a good opportunity for Zak to get out and try to get some games.

“From the feedback I had, he did well. Hopefully he can play week in, week out and gain experience. Dan came to us injured and was behind the rest of the group and it was difficult to get him up to speed.

“There’s a few silly rumours out there but there was no issue with his attitude or no big fall-out.

“I didn’t feel he was going to get the opportunities I’d hoped would happen for him. It didn’t seem right to harm his development.”
