The flying full-back had been sidelined for three-and-a-half months after breaking his fibula and sustaining ligament damage on the final day of last season.

The injury, which required surgery, ruined Riley's summer plans and meant a long road to recovery laid ahead.

But now he has returned to full training, the ex-Bolton Wanderers man is determined to make up for lost time and help the Montgomery Waters Meadow side push on.

"I've played at a higher level before and just because I've had a few injuries or whatever doesn't mean I don't want to get back to a higher level," said a determined Riley.

"This club definitely wants to get to a higher level and the way we're going at the moment, we just keep pushing on and I think we can get there.

"All I've ever wanted to do is play. Touch wood I can have an injury free season when I get back after this and Shrewsbury Town fans can see what I'm all about again.

"There is light at the end of the tunnel, when I did it there were fears that it could've been worse than what it was.

"Bolts (James Bolton) has been doing brilliant since he's come in. He's made the step up brilliantly. Like the gaffer wants, there's competition.

"He's a great lad. We had it a bit last year with Jack Grimmer as well, competition brings out the best in people."

The 25-year-old, from Manchester, did eventually get some sun over the close-season. After a couple of cancellations, one personal holiday was followed by joining Paul Hurst and his squad in Portugal.

He added: "I was still on the crutches so it wasn't a great holiday but I got away in the sun.

"Obviously I got away with the lads to Portugal so it was really nice for the manager and Doigy to include me in that.

"Simple things like walking, you take it for granted, that was one big hurdle.

"I don't think I'm anywhere near myself, I definitely need a few week's training before I'm anywhere near it.

"You learn things a bit more (when injured) and do things a bit differently.

"I tend to watch a lot more football when I'm injured! You can still learn by watching."
