Rivals threatening Jayson Leutwiler's No.1 Shrewsbury Town role
Jayson Leutwiler’s position as Shrewsbury Town No.1 is in doubt, boss Paul Hurst has
admitted.
Leutwiler is currently in the USA on international duty with Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, while Hurst has brought in two goalkeepers.
Former Walsall keeper Craig MacGillivray and on-loan Manchester United youngster Dean Henderson have both checked in, with the duo set to battle it out for the No.1 spot this season.
Swiss-born glovesman Leutwiler has been Town’s first-choice for three seasons but now finds himself down the pecking order. And the boss suggested that a deal to see Leutwiler head in the opposite direction will only be agreed if it suits the 28-year-old shot-stopper.
Hurst said: “Realistically, I have brought two keepers in and, to be fair to them, they were probably two of our better players on Tuesday night.
“It’s difficult because Jayson’s obviously gone away and you want to work with the players that are going to be really pressing to be part of that line-up at the start of the season.”
Hurst remains confident there would be interest from other clubs in securing the former Basel and Middlesbrough man’s signature.
He said: “I’m sure there will be. Whether it’s interest that ultimately is of interest to Jayson is the first thing, but at the minute it’s difficult because he’s not around, can’t go and speak to anyone or anything like that, so we’ll just see how the situation pans out.”
Meanwhile, fellow Town keeper Shaun Rowley has had positive news on a knee scare following a scan. Results have shown no surgery is required.
The 20-year-old prospect landed awkwardly in Portugal and had a scan on Monday upon Town’s return.
“It’s showed some damage in there but nowhere near as much as we thought,” said Hurst. “He’s been quite fortunate and it’s good news. It looks like he won’t need an operation which was a surprise to Chris (Skitt, physio). He could be back as early as a couple of weeks.”
