Town have offered contracts to four players and released four with Hurst anticipating a busy summer of change.

And as he explores potential options for his re-building job, Hurst believes patience is crucial in forming his squad.

The Greenhous Meadow chief has compiled a list of targets and admitted signing the right characters will be vital.

“I’m sure there are targets we have to wait on, for whatever reason that may be,” said Hurst.

“In our position we have to be patient. I hope it will not spread panic through the community if we have not got a squad in place instantly. It will be a long summer of work to get the squad we want.

“We have a list of players that we have had for quite a while now that you compile over the season, or agents get in touch.”

Hurst, who led a rebuild with ex-side Grimsby last summer after achieving League Two status with the Mariners, believes the financial expectations of some targets are unrealistic.

He added: “You speak to some players and they are deluded, they think they are going to play in the Premier League.

“Some lads are more level-headed and understand the football environment and perhaps see more value in coming to a well-run club.

“Others are more money orientated. You find out along the way the ones who are the right characters.”

Meanwhile, Hurst confirmed that popular full-back Jack Grimmer will not return to Town on a permanent deal. The Scot spent three loan spells at the club but was scarcely used by Hurst last term.

“I’ll be open about that, Jack’s not one we’re looking to sign,” said Hurst.

“What I would say, before my time, he’s served the club well and it’s testament to what he thinks of the club that he kept coming back – he obviously enjoyed his time and felt looked after.”

n Shrewsbury Ladies boss Sean Evans has announced he will step down at the end of the season after four years with the club.
