Paul Hurst: I'm so glad I came to Shrewsbury Town

Paul Hurst feels his decision to leave Grimsby for Shrewsbury in October was vindicated even if he hadn't have achieved League One survival with Town.

Some eyebrows were raised when Hurst and No.2 Chris Doig swapped the League Two play-off-chasing Mariners for Town – who were rock-bottom of League One at the time.

But the Yorkshireman, who secured Shrewsbury's League One status despite a final day defeat at Oxford, believes that the decision to move on would've been correct even if Town had suffered the drop.

Grimsby, who have since sacked Hurst's replacement Marcus Bignot, now sit 14th in League Two with one game to play.

"One hundred per cent I think the decision to move has been vindicated, even if we got relegated it was," said Hurst, who spent five years with Grimsby. "I've spoke well of the club and that's all genuine – it's not to try to make the chairman and the fans happy.

"We've enjoyed it. We're now in a position where we will push and ask to make things better again. Whether we'll get everything that we want, remains to be seen.

"The thing is I haven't come to Shrewsbury to keep us where we are. I want to see if we can progress.

"At the same time I know we won't have anywhere near the top budget in the league, so we have to try to be better in other ways. Results since we've come in would suggest we can do that, to a degree.

"All of the work that's been done, in terms of staying in the league, has been done now. It doesn't count for anything when we start in August."

Hurst is anticipating a busy first summer with Shrewsbury, with Town's retained list expected out today or tomorrow.

"The players that are with us know the standards we are talking about," he added. "There are certainly some that will still be with us, they know how we work and what we expect. I don't like the word project – it's a load of rubbish on most occasions. We're quite open, we haven't joined to be part of a project, we joined to progress the football club
